Many people don't realize that their mortgage company has placed coverage for them. Whether you are escrowed or not, you have the option of choosing who you want for your insurance company. However, if you don't provide your own insurance the mortgage company will place their's for you. The mortgage company's policy only covers the house not your personal property. It also is usually twice as expensive as you could get it yourself. It usually doesn't cover the amount you need in case the house is totally destroyed. It usually only covers the loan amount. This policy is not in your best interest. The good news is you can have them take their policy off as soon as you provide them with your own policy. You auto finance company has the same ability as well.
