In a lengthy statement dominated by anti-corporate rhetoric, Anonymous said: “Whoever broke into Sony's servers to steal the credit card info and left a document blaming Anonymous clearly wanted Anonymous to be blamed for the most significant digital theft in history.”
Sony has said it does not believe credit card details was stolen, apart from a small "outdated database" of around 23,400, but the Anonymous statement denies "the credit card theft" and says "our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft". The collective claims to have no formal leadershi and says anyone is welcome to claim membership.
It follows a letter from the firm's chairman Kazuo Hirai to a US Congressional committee yesterday in which he revealed that investigators had found a file left behind by the hackers. It was named “Anonymous” and included the words “We Are Legion”, part of the collective’s motto.
“A group of standard online thieves would have every reason to frame Anonymous in order to put law enforcement off the track,” Anonymous said.
