Coastal county residents will see their Texas Windstorm Insurance Association rates increase by 5 percent beginning in January. But much broader — and some Galveston County representatives and residents say unfair — changes to windstorm insurance rates could be on the horizon.

The 5 percent rate increase approved Tuesday by the windstorm insurance association board in Austin will apply to all Texans who have a policy through the association.

The association includes all casualty and property insurers in Texas and is the insurer of last resort for those along the coast who can’t find insurance for storm and hurricane damage in the private market.

The association provides coverage to more than 67,000 commercial and residential policyholders in Galveston County and more than 200,000 in Texas.
